Mary VALENTINE (nee PRINCE) - Emigration Details?
« on: Tuesday 08 September 15 05:33 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Mary Valentine is my great-great-grandmother.

I am trying to determine when she emigrated to Australia and have struck nothing but dead ends.

The information I have so far, subject to confirmation:
born Andley, Chester, England in 1822
parents William and Mary (nee Rutter)
married Charles Valentine Feb 5 1855 in Geelong, Vic.
     4 children, Ann (1857), Alice (1858), Mary (1860), Jane (1862)
died Sep 7 1906, buried in Clunes Cemetery, Vic

Charles from Wimbledon, England may well have come to Australia at the age of 18 in Nov 1852 on board the "Chalmers", but I can find nothing for Mary.

Any help would be appreciated.
     Brendan

Hi

Just to clarify, you are looking for the arrival of Mary PRINCE who married Charles Valentine? Do you know if any other family members came to Australia?

Andy

Sorry, didn't read your post thoroughly.
Yes, looking for when Mary Prince came to Australia.
No, I have no knowledge of any other family members coming to Australia, however, I have not followed that line of research as yet. The knowledge of Mary at this stage is extremely scant - no idea of any siblings and very little information about her parents, other than their names.

Hi

The link below looks to be the Intended Marriage for William & Mary
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F7FM-Z23

And this looks to be the marriage
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NNPY-MYJ

Findmypast looks to have the image for the marriage.

Both Familysearch and Findmypast have a possible christening for Mary Prince at Hargrave, Cheshire, and also for an older sister Alice.

I'm wondering if the birthplace for Mary Prince should be Handley, Cheshire. This is very close to Hargrave.

I haven't found a record for the arrival of Mary unfortunately, do you have her death certificate? If so, does that have any indication as to when she arrived?

Andy

Should place of birth read Handley,Cheshire? Her death certificate would help,,http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,373754.0.html
If she arrived before 1853 you will need to look at NSW records for Port Phillip district.
