The widow Cassidy of Kilmarnock
« on: Tuesday 08 September 15 11:24 BST (UK) »
Hello again

Another one I am asking for help with is an article in the Glasgow Sentinel November the 12th 1853 sourced from the British Newspaper archives describes the Widow Cassidy receiving money because she had lost her Daughter and Grandchild on the Annie Jane. The problem is who were they? Possible names are Mary Cassidy and Daniel Cassidy, if so she was unmarried? Was she involved with one of the Glasgow joiners or was she under another name altogether?
Am I looking at the wrong person.

Thanks for reading.

It's me again, Alan popping up like a bad penny  ;D

There is a widow called Margaret Cassidy on the 1851 Census at Kilmarnock on the 1851 Census -
Address - Braeside Society's Land
CASSIDY   Margt       Head   W    60   Tambourer    Ayrshire - Kilmarnock
CASSIDY   Mary         Dau   -      17   Mill Worker    Ayrshire - Kilmarnock
CASSIDY   Margaret    Dau   M     24   House Keeper    Ayrshire - Kilmarnock
OWENS   John          Sonlaw   M    25   Calico Printer    Ayrshire - Kilmarnock
OWENS   Margaret   Grndau   -      5       Ayrshire - Kilmarnock
OWENS   Mary         Grndau   -      2       Ayrshire - Kilmarnock
CAMERON   Ellen   Lodger   W   F   33   Tambourer    Ireland
CAMERON   Susan   Lodger   -   F   4       Ireland

Margaret Cassidy jnr is married to John Owens and is still alive and having children in 1860s.

Same family 10 years earlier in Kilmarnock.
I believe they are living at High Street -

CAUSIDY   Andrew   M   45   Woolspinner    Ireland
CAUSIDY   Margrate   F   50   Tambourer    Ayrshire
CAUSIDY   Sussanah   F   18   Card Feeder    Ayrshire
CAUSIDY   Ann   F   15   Card Feeder    Ayrshire
CAUSIDY   Margrate   F   14   Woolspinner    Ayrshire
 CAUSIDY   Mary   F   7       Ayrshire
CAUSIDY   Margart   F   16   Woolspinner    Outside Census County
* all spellings as transcribed on Freecen

Sussanah Causidy/ Susannah Cassidy/ Susan Cassidy marries a James Nicol and is still alive having children after 1853 (she is on 1861 Census).
Ann Causidy  / Cassidy marries a John Birt and is still alive having children between 1853 (she is on 1861 Census as Ann Burr).
That leaves young Mary and the third MargartCassidy who looks ti be lodging with the family.

I have not found a marriage yet for Mary Cassidy - not to day there wasn't one.

Hello everybody

I like the look of the first Mary I had a look in Scotlands people for the birth of Daniel, but nothing, he could have been two years old and not made the census, but then if he was illegitimate would he have been baptised?
I think this one is going to remain a puzzle too.
But reading that article again it says a gentleman in Kilmarnock, it doesn't say the widow is. hmm

Thanks to you both yet again for trying so hard, I do appreciate it.

It's been a good day though somebody discovered who the elusive Mr Cattely was, a 13 year old boy and also Mrs Rose first name and their place of residence in Quebec.

Regards Allan

Ps
Would somebody like to tell me what a Tambourer does?

Mmm - it does indeed say " a gentleman of Kilmarnock" ....maybe widow Cassidy not from there....and yet why would someone from Kilmarnock speak out on this lady's behalf unless he was related to her or acquainted with her. Pity the article doesn't name him.
Today's press would have his name , age and where he lived ...we'd know his job. his wife her age and all his kids! Same for the widow - we would have her life story too.

A Tambourer would sew/embroider probably working at home in this era.

Handy website above gives definition -
Tambourer              Embroiderer using hoops to hold the cloth

Good that you have had some positive success.

Hello Looby

I don't think so? I think I only found it once? will check that out tonight, One of my problems is the British newspaper archives keeps expanding adding new newspapers all the time so its quite possible that I have missed something,

Thanks again

Just to confuse things even more .... although by the 1850's the "habit" was falling into disuse a Widow in Scotland would often revert to her maiden name upon the death of her spouse but would have been referred to as a Widow to differentiate her from a single woman.
