Where is Claremont Place, Edinburgh?
« on: Tuesday 08 September 15 11:56 BST (UK) »
Hi

The death certificate of one my relations who died in 1884 is shown as 10 Claremont Place in Edinburgh, I was hoping to see what his house looked like now on street maps, but there is no Claremont Place coming up and I can find nothing on the internet that the street has changed name to something else.
There are some other streets beginning with 'Claremont' in Edinburgh, such as Crescent and Road but would like to know where 10 Claremont Place is/was if possible.
Thanks

Hi Tom,

Is it possible to include further details please, such as name, age, occupation & any family please to help with your query  ???

Who was the informant of the death  ???

There may have been a mix-up with the street name so a look at census records may reveal something  ???

Any other details are always a pointer  ;)

Found a bit more..............

If you google this.....
1853 Claremont Place Stockbridge Edinburgh now Henderson Row

And this.....

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/churchdb/check/MLNchurchdb_check_links.shtml

Last large paragraph from the bottom of the page  ;)

"the street was designed in the 1820s. Originally called Claremont Place, the street was quickly renamed Claremont Street, and then West Claremont Street. In 1968 it was renamed yet again, to Saxe Coburg Street. Round the corner, on Henderson Row".........

Plenty to choose from but you wonder why all the name changes......nonsensical  ::)

Not quite!
If you look at the Old maps site (ordnance survey) you can see Claremont place on a map of 1876. It is actually the western half of what is now all called Henderson Row. What is now Saxe Coburg street was called West Claremont street and ran at an angle to the western end of Claremont Place. On the 1893 map of the area, the whole road is called Henderson Row and Claremont Place name has disappeared. West Claremont Street is still there and yet to be renamed. Enter EH3 5BH on old maps search.

There is a Claremont Park & Road & gardens in Leith, so I expect renaming was done to avoid confusion.

Added
there's a map from the 1850s which has West Claremont street as just Claremont Street, so even more of a postman's nightmare!
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Hi Lizzie,

I think I covered the basics in my post.....

1853 Claremont Place Stockbridge Edinburgh now Henderson Row

And this.....

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/churchdb/check/MLNchurchdb_check_links.shtml

"the street was designed in the 1820s. Originally called Claremont Place, the street was quickly renamed Claremont Street, and then West Claremont Street. In 1968 it was renamed yet again, to Saxe Coburg Street. Round the corner, on Henderson Row".........
[/quote

We know from the above that Claremont Place was changed if you had read the above post properly  ::)
The fact that Saxe Coburg Street is in use with the sale property this seems likely to have been where Tom's relative's death occurred   ???
