Gilmours and Fultons, Threepwood
« on: Wednesday 09 September 15 08:52 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to trace original occupants of two buildings (Burdiehouse and Newhouse of Threepwood) in Beith and can only see as far back as 1841 census.

Both buildings appear on Robert Aitken's parish map of Beith from 1827.

1841 census shows:
Newhouse of Threepwood - John Gilmour, married to Margaret, with children Robert and Marrion (& others?)
Burdiehouse - Margaret Shedden (50yo) with children William, Janet, Robert & Alexander (all with surname Fulton).

1851 census shows:
Newhouse of Threepwood - William Fulton (presumably the son from Burdiehouse of 1841 census) married to Agnes, with sons Robert and William.
Burdiehouse - Margaret Fulton (58yo), presumably nee Shedden, as widow with children Janet, Robert & Alexander (all with surname Fulton).

I understand both buildings were occupied until 1940s.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Scott

Hi Trish
Wow, you are good at this!
I'm new to all this research malarky, but finding it strangely addictive!!!
My interest is initially in the buildings (eg when built etc) and through this I am interested in their occupants over the years.
I picked up some info at North Ayrshire Heritage Centre in Saltcoats.
There seems to be an element of passing from one generation to the next, so by following the families I might learn more about the buildings.

Hi. I have an OPR Birth Record containing the birth of "Mary Fulton lawful daughter to John Fulton in Threepwood born 20 May 1734".

Scott, you mentioned Robert Aitken's 1827 parish map of Beith. Is this available to view online somewhere?  (I couldn't find it on NLS maps).

Scott, I've been making a list of placenames recorded on Roy's 1752 Lowland Map of Beith, and am stuck on what Roy seems to have have written as "Nebony", which is about the same location as Burdiehouse. In your research have you come across any earlier name for Burdiehouse which might clarify my "Nebony"?

Hi
I have a scanned copy of the Aitken map - they have a copy at the North Ayrshire Heritage Centre in Saltcoats and also in the Beith Townhouse.
Do you live local to the area?  Rakiura has NZ links.
I have seen mention of "Nebony" in an old will or sasine, I believe it was mentioned as an area excluded from the said document - I'll try to dig it out.
We are not allowed to exchange email addresses through the forum, is that right?
Would be good to compare notes.
