help understanding pensions record
« on: Wednesday 09 September 15 23:49 BST (UK) »
Hi. I have found a pensions record for Alfred Mills born Eastham Worcs son of George Mills of Collington . From what I can decipher it gives dates from 18-3-1914 to 18-3-1916 but appears to say place of service= home , a number 1633 and regiment 3-1st MOW.
Can anyone help me make head or tails of this please?

Can't directly help you but I have looked before at a site named The long long trail - just google it - and there is lots of info and photos from WW1 including abbreviations etc. its well worth a look.

Good luck

A quick look at the record -it is MON not MOW so probably the Monmouthshire regiment.
It also says he was in the Navy previously but not suitable for going to sea.

He didn't serve overseas, staying in the Reserve for his 1 year and 357 days service.  Discharged as unfit due for duties due to hammer toes, which are a permanet bend in the toes usually caused by poor fitting foot wear.

I think this is his navy service record: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6866430 only served as a Boy 2nd Class on Ganges II for a few months between Oct 1911 and Jan 1912 before being discharged.

Wow! Thank you all for this. Thought I had read the word "navy" somewhere but thought I was wrong. Now it makes sense.
