Looking for place in Carmarthen
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 19:27 BST (UK) »
On a birth certificate (1928) I have just received it gives the address as 'Big Yard' in Camrian Place, Carmarthen. There is a short street of Cambrian Place (though it may have been longer). Does anyone have a map with it on as I can't seem to find one. As the mother is a domestic servant, I am assuming she was working at this address as the birth address for her child gives Penlow (or Penlaw) Rd in Saint Peters Carmarthen. But is Saint Peters a parish? Any help appreciated.

St Peters is indeed a parish in Carmarthen - GenUKi link - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Carmarthen - provides more information.

Cambrian Place is a short street which runs into John Street and Chapel Street (try google maps post code SA31 1AW which shows its location).

I've found a Penlan Road in Carmarthen if that's any help.

I searched for "yard cambrian" (include the "   "), which threw up a number of hits. Highest house no. is 6?

Cambrian Place now has Boots M&S even the Job Centre. That area would have been the centre of Carmarthen, near the cattle mart and old shopping area. It has change so much. As for St Peters, it is an area around the church of the same name. It starts at the end of Spilman Street and runs around the church, to a car park. Now there is the council run art gallery which was the old art school opposite the church entrance. St Peters Street runs from the car park / church and was the main shopping street.

Talacharn,
A warm welcome to Rootschat. The link is to an 1888 Town Plan of Carmarthen

There are 2 yards coming off the Cambrian Place that runs east/west (Cambrian Place to Walter's Row). I wonder if they might have been known as "Big Yard" and "Little Yard"?

The URL is correct but is delivering a blank screen. The map is from the Llyfrgell Genedlaethol collection.

Click on link and select "Carmarthen" from list. Select map no. XXXIX 7.1 and scroll to reveal Cambrian Place

You need an old map of Carmarthen as all around has been demolished and rebuilt.
I suggest Carmarthenshire Archives but they are having a new building next to Carmarthen Library, so most is in storage. They may be able to locate a map or photographs of the yards. Email: fhs@carmarthenshire.gov.uk

There is a Penuel Street nearish to St Peters.
I live about 13 miles from Carmarthen and remember as a child on holiday down here, going into Carmarthen for the market, how different it is now.
