Edgar John Jewell
« on: Friday 11 September 15 17:23 BST (UK) »
Edgar John Jewell was born in Siddington in 1849 to John and Caroline Jewell. In 1875 he married Emily Mary Jones in Cirencester.

In 1881 he was living in Siddington, aged 31, working as an agricultural labourer with his widowed mother and his wife Emily (27). (RG11 2555 99 11)

By 1891 he his living in Oakle Street, Churchman, Westbury on Severn, aged 39, working as an agricultural labourer , with Clara Jewell (24), who is described as his second wife and was born in Chalford. (RG12 2007 101 5).

There are several problems:

(1) I can't find a death for Emily Mary Jewell between 1881 and 1891.
(2) I can't find a marriage for Edgar and Clara between 1881 and 1891.
(3) I can't find a birth for Clara in Chalford c1867.
(4) I can't find either Edgar or Clara in the 1911 census.
(5) I can't find a death for Edgar.
(6) I can't find a death for Clara.

Any suggestions as to a way forward?

I see that the youngest child with Edgar in 1891, Caroline, was baptised as Caroline Allen Jewell,  daughter of Edgar and Emily at Siddington on 4 April 1886 - narrowing the dates a bit.

True, but I'm still having problems finding either Emily's death or Edgar's re-marriage in the admittedly small interval of Apr 1886 - April 1891!

Understood. Knowing what we do of the Jewells they'll probably have changed surnames a couple of times en route!

I see that Caroline Allen Jewell married Bert Highley in Newport Monmouthshire in Mar qtr 1911 and can be found with him in Wales shortly thereafter.

Have you traced what became of the other children, or indeed found any of the family in 1901?

Makes sense as several sources say Edgar John was a carter. As for the Welsh connection, Emily came from the Principality.

Edgar seems to use both names, some documents naming as Edgar and other as John.

According to the 1881 census an Ada Jewell was living with Elizabeth Dean at 45 Henrietta Street, Portsea Island. She was a "nurse child", aged 1. This is consistent with being born in 1880, which is what the marriage certificate to Thomas Peart suggests. Problem is that it states she was born in Portsmouth! So possibly not our family.

On the other hand, there was according to the 1911 census an Ada PEART, a charwoman aged 31, living at 74 Sweetbriar Street, Gloucester with her husband Thomas and three children, who was born in Siddington!

Yes Ada PEART is the person.

Baptised Ada Priscilla Jewell d/o Edgar & Emily at Siddington, 12 Mar 1879.

If I recall correctly she was Priscilla (or variant spelling) aged 2 in 1881, with her parents.

There is a John Jewell, aged 52, a general farm labourer, born in Diddington, Gloucestershire in the 1901 census. He is married to Mary Jewell, aged 42, and they have three children (Emily 14, William 3, and Agnes 1). They are living at Limekil House, Leigh, Tewkesbury. (RG13 2469 38 1).

What do you think? Same family?
