Can anyone find a headstone, and take a photo for me?
« on: Monday 14 September 15 13:00 BST (UK) »
On my recent visit to the Ullapool museum, I discovered a death record for a family member, but didn't have the time to find the cemetery and take a photo of the headstone, so I was hoping that someone local might be able to help me with this this.
I have contacted Roddie Macpherson from " rosscromartyroots " and he tells me that the only headstone photos he has are pre-1980.
The burial ground I am interested in is The Clachan, which Roddie Macperson tells me is at the head of Lochbroom.
My family members are James Mackenzie (Jimmy Ferry) who died on 18 January 1984, aged 78 - and his wife, Catherine Mackenzie (nee Macrae) who died on 26 October 2000, aged 92.
Apparently, Jimmy and Catherine have been laid to rest in lair number 61, The Clachan burial ground.
Thanks, in advance, to anyone who might be able to help me.

Have you confirmed that a headstone exists?

No, I haven't.
I possibly just presumed there was a headstone, after reading a transcription in one of the folders at The Ullapool Museum.
Next time I'm in Scotland, I shall make sure I have more time to search.
Thanks for the link.

I'll be heading up that way tomorrow morning, so I'll have a look in and get some piccies for you.

(I had this trip planned since before your first post but didn't want to raise your hopes and then have you wait so long for the result!)

If you have already received photos elsewhere please let me know.

No, I haven't received any photos from anyone. It would be brilliant if you could find the lair, and maybe even the headstone.
Thank you so, so much, for offering.

As you weren't sure whether or not there was a headstone, I sought out the Locality Office in Ullapool to track down a Burial Ground layout plan using your clue of Lair #61.
The very helpful assistant remembered your earlier query and I managed to get a photocopy of the layout plan which made finding the grave very easy.

I'm attaching only a few piccies to save the forum's bandwidth, but I've also taken others showing the rest of the burial ground and the grave's location within. If you want these, contact me with your email addy and I'll send them direct.

Curiously, on a much lighter note, there were a couple of coincidences today.
1. I notice that Catherine died on my birthday, 23rd October.
2. I took delivery of my present car on my birthday, 23rd October 1991.
3. The first person I saw upon entering the Locality Office was an ex-colleague (who was visiting and haven't seen for ages) and whom I drove, as a bride to her wedding, in my car a year later!

So all in all, a successful/curious day.
