Valuation Office Dublin
« on: Wednesday 16 September 15 12:10 BST (UK) »
I'm thinking of paying a visit to the Valuation Office in the near future and I was just wondering if anyone knows if photographs of the books are allowed?
Thanks, Frostyknight

The first thing they want to know is the Barony!!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Hi folks, many thanks for your replies. I know the Barony (Corkaree in Westmeath) and I'm looking forward to (hopefully) finding some useful info in the V. O. Thanks again  :)

If you have not seen the revaluation books before, you might want to look at the books for Northern Ireland to give you an idea. They are on-line (and free to view), and are otherwise identical to those you will find in the Valuation Office in Dublin.

http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/val12b.htm

Search for a townland and bring up a few images, to get an idea of the format. The valuation clerks revisited each townland about every 1 or 2 years, and recorded changes in different coloured inks, usually (but not always) with the year of any change noted in the right hand column. The dates can be out by a year or two sometimes.

In general the clerks started a new book every 10 years or so. The records go from the primary valuation up to about 1929.
