He may not have died at home though - a workhouse being one of the possibilities given the poor law records.

I assume the nearest Workhouse would have been Cirencester. I'm sorry, but my geographical knowledge of this part of the world is very poor.

Or would the one at Stroud have been nearer? I see that there is a death for Stroud in Q4 1848.

There were Workhouses in Chipping Sodbury, Wickwar and other nearby places. Cirencester is too far away.

You can discount the Thornbury RD one as he was 74.
Also the Stroud RD one as he was 72.

Many thanks for both the interesting insights into the workhouses (where an awful lot of my relatives seem to have ended up) and the help with elimination.

As far as I can see there are still - if we use the list generated by FreeBMD - 11 possible candidates, though I am at a lost as to why BLUNSON, ironically the only Chipping Sudbury candidate, is included. I really don't want to have to order all 11 certificates!

I have ordered the Poor Law Reports and I am now awaiting their arrival.

As to identifying the death of John Ballinger, sometime between 1842 and 1851, I am at a loss as to how to proceed.

I know little to nothing about poor law/overseers' records but I wonder if there is a possibility that his death will be mentioned on there?  It may be that an illness or infirmity of his was the reason the family came within the overseers' purview.  I will be interested to learn what they do cover.

I have now paid my £6 and received the report of the Overseers from Gloucester Archives. However, I'm not sure what I can share, as I had to sign a declaration to get the report.

In particular, see (b) "will not supply a copy of it to any other person, persons or organisation".
