« on: Wednesday 16 September 15 18:53 BST (UK) »
Would i be able to get a birth cert from 1799? did they even exist then? the person i'm looking at says he was born in Staithes there is a baptism record for him in Whitby which states his full DOB which would help if i could get it.

Hi Lisa,

Civil registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths on began on 1 July 1837 - when such events were officially registered and certificates produced.

For events occurring prior to that date - I'm afraid we are dependant upon parish registers - and the further back you go with them - the less information is provided.

Civil Registration only started in 1837, so no birth certs before then.
You will be reliant on Parish Registers of christenings. But of course not everyone was christened,  and not always as a baby.

If you have found your baptism on family search you can find siblings by

1. clicking the batch nimber - inserting the surname - with a father's name and a range of dates around the baptism you have. You should then find siblings baptised at the same church

OR

2 in the normal search pane -- insert surname -- insert father's name - and agin use a range of dates around the baptism you have -- along with the county as the location. (just in case they moved parishes!)

You can search for siblings this way on any site where searchable parish registers are available.

That's great Lisa. I am pleased it worked for you.

It can give you a good idea of knowing when the parents may have married -- and you never know -- one of the baptisms may just sneak a mother's name in -- but be wary also of second marriages.
