Devizes New Prison or Gaol Records 1849
« on: Thursday 17 September 15 03:36 BST (UK) »
I live in New Zealand & I am researching my husband's TOWNSEND family. A Henry TOWNSEND was given a 4 month sentence in the Assizes court on 20 Feb 1849 for stealing a watch, chain & seal. I am trying to ascertain whether this is our Henry TOWNSEND (my husband's paternal gg grandfather), b. 1809 Box Wiltshire. Does anyone know if the Devizes Gaol/Prison ('New Prison') records are available on-line? I'm hoping that a prison record may have info such as his age & where he lived.
Our Henry emigrated to Vic. Australia in abt 1857 & then NZ where he d.1889, Otago, NZ. There are 2 other court records for Henry TOWNSEND in Jan 1849 & Apr 1854 on charges of larceny. He was acquitted of both these charges.

A slightly join the dots tentative reply. According to the criminal registers transcripts, the 1854 accused Henry has a dob of 1811, near enough to perhaps be the 1810 butcher born in Box, husband of Emely.  The 1849 man has a dob of 1822 and is most likely the one born Westport Wilts, son of John and Sarah.  Can't track the prison records but there may be a real expert out there!

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

The local newspaper February 1863 also has a Henry Townsend being committed to New Prison for stealing fowl so he could be worth looking at in case it eliminates one of the other two.

Thanks for your prompt replies. It looks like I should contact the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre & see if they have any prison records? From your replies it's looking like the 1854 Henry Townsend charged with larceny could be ours but probably not the 1849 guy, but then birth dates are often inaccurate that far back. He wouldn't be the 1863 guy as he was in Australia or NZ by then but as you say, rosie99, it might help in an elimination process.
