The English-born (?) Grant family (late 19th/early 20th century)
« on: Thursday 17 September 15 19:25 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Could anyone help with any biographical information on the elusive Grant family who were living in South Africa in the late 19th/early 20th century? This family appears to have included the champion tennis players, namely Mabel, Beatrice and Jack Grant. However, they are extremely hard to track down. They might have emigrated to South Africa from England.

I would be grateful for any information anyone could provide on the aforementioned trio and their parents and siblings (there appears to have been more than three children in the family).

Kind regards,

J.

You can try our archives here http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dl

Select the option for RSA on the page and enter their names in the search box there were a number of returns
You can also then try the option SAB on the page and follow the same process.

Good luck

This forum suggests that Mabel Grant was "probably a native of Natal":

http://www.tennisforum.com/25415290-post772.html

...and the editor of her husband Edmund Neville Nevill's diary about their visit to England in 1895, during which their daughter Maud Sybil Helen Nevill was born, says "...of course, Mabel had never visited Britain before...":

There seems to be quite a bit on FamilySearch.org on the Grants, may be worth a look may find the rest of them :)

Background on the Grant family, from the Nevill diaries:

http://old.assa.saao.ac.za/html/history-archive/natal_obs_grey/11-7_marriage_children.pdf

what a wonderful find. Wouldn't it be nice if we could all find such informative snippets on our families  :) :)
