Elgin photographers late 1800s to early 1900s
« on: Friday 18 September 15 16:40 BST (UK) »
We have recently come across some old portrait photographs which may be my husband's ancestors.

At the moment we have no idea who they are.

Three different photographers are involved.  Stewart, Robert Stewart, R Stewart, (assuming all three Stewarts are the same family) Hay and A. Anderson.

Can anybody help us determine when these photographers were in business in Elgin.  Can we check anywhere to see when the name of the Stewart photographer changed if it was the same family.

Any help in identifying when our photographs were taken would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Betty

If this doesn't progress, maybe consider posting on this board here www.rootschat.com/forum/free-photo-restoration/

Your question here seems to look for details on the photographer(s) of photos. That is a good board to also ask that question.

Thanks for looking up the censuses for me.  That is great.  Especially the address of High Street, Elgin.  That is on one of the photographs.  It confirms the time period which is a beginning to perhaps  learning more about our photographs.

Thanks for your time.
Betty

Yes but there was another Robert Stewart, Photographer in 1903 at 135 High St. (maybe a family member).

In 1863 Alex Anderson is listed he was at 64 Academy St.

No Hay perhaps he wasn't in Elgin.

These and many more years can browse through and even search for at the NLS http://www.nls.uk for free.

yes he would be the older Roberts son born Elgin 1851 on the 1901 census he is at 3 West Rd Elgin and his occupation phoipecher ( thanks Ancestry- I assume that is photographer)
1891 Lossie Wynd
listed as Robert Stewart jnr a photographer. His son is Robert Douglas Stewart, so I suppose potential for a third generation.
1881 he is working with his father both photographers.
