Just a word of caution - I only gave the CARSON/OSMUNDSON marriage as a possible one.  You would need to do a lot more investigation to see if it was correct!

After my initial excitement, I  did  realize that there is insufficient information to confirm that this is my Samuel. In fact, I am now thinking it is not. But I do thank you so much for sending it so I could check it out.

Hi Nigel,
thank you for having a look. I am back to thinking Mary Butcher for his  wife but don't know how I will prove that as yet. She was born in 1740 as per Pennie's post which is the  exact right age for Samuel's  wife Mary who died in 1801 at age 61. Samuel and Mary Carson signed the will of John Butcher.
Will also look for will of Samuel's father Samuel but that might be back in Ireland. I  don't have a spouse's name for Samuel Carson Sr. either. According to another poster, many Carsons were involved in the spirit trade and did travel a lot but not sure if that is my Carsons.
Thanks
Peggy

FYI, I have now eliminated Mary Edmundson as the wife of my Samuel Carson. Her date of birth was  June 7, 1753, Baptism 3 July 1753 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire. My Samuel's wife was born 1740 as per her death in 1801 at age 61.  That fits the date of birth of Mary Butcher as her baptism  in 1740 in Goring, Oxfordshire.  Can anyone tell me the father or parents of Mary in 1740? Wondering if her father was John which would further lead me to think that she is the wife of my Samuel Carson.
Thanks for any help

Hi Peggy,
I don't know if you are aware that the original parish registers have been put on Ancestry by the OFHS.
Frustratingly, looking at the Goring registers it seems there is nothing for 1740 (they go from 1739 - 1741 and then nothing between 1741 & 1746). In 1739 there is a bapt. for
" 22-11-1739 Mary d/o Phillip Butcher and Ann his wife"

I did look at 1739 but no luck for your Mary Butler. (Is "Butcher" definately her surname)

In fact it would appear that 1738 is also missing.

Hello Alan,
Thank you very much for looking for Mary Butcher's baptism. I must admit to feeling confused. I understood there was a baptism for Mary Butcher in Goring in 1740. The 1739 baptism has different parents than I expected, with her father being Phillip.
Thanks again

Here's the full entry of the 1740 Goring baptism (as it appears in the original registers):

12 NOV 1740 - Mary BUTCHER, daughter of John BUTCHER and Mary COLEMAN

It appears in a Goring parish register and the cover states that it covers baptisms from 1719 to 1808, marriages from 1719 to ? (date obliterated) and burials from 1719 to 1808.

It also includes the following entry:

22 NOV 1739 - Mary, daughter of Philip BUTLER and Anne his wife

I can confirm that the original register image definitely shows BUTLER and not BUTCHER.

Hi Penny & Peggy,

So pleased you have been able to confirm Mary Butcher's bapt.  The register I was looking at was for Goring 1673 - 1747 - so they must have had a couple of registers going at the same time which overlapped. I have noticed this before with some parishes.
