In the 1881 census at Shawhill Farm, Riccarton, Ayrshire, Christina Bowman aged 10 b. Holywood, Dumfriesshire is listed as a niece and scholar to James and Jane Bowman. I'm unable to source any records for her - can anyone help.   Gray865

Hi G,

Have you found her in 1891.

Is it possible she was the daughter (prior to marriage) of someone who married a brother of James?

Annie

ADDED.....Given the surname Bowman after the marriage?

This could be a possibility in the 1891 census address Oakbank House Maybole Ayrshire
James S Porteous  age 50 Schoolmaster
George D Porteousage 55 teacher son ?
Richard 14,James 12, David 9,William 7,
Jane Bowman b Tinwald age 68 Aunt
Christina Porteous b 1871 b Holywood age 20 niece
This could be Christina and Jane Bowman going by the birthplaces and ages in the 1881 census ?

Your brilliant Rosie. Indeed it is Christina.  Though why the record didn't show on SP is strange as I had put in Porteous.  I also had the Porteous family at Maybole but didn't check all the censuses.  I basically was going round in circles, I needed fresh eyes so thank you all for being so helpful.
