Farley (or Farleigh) Castle - birth ?
« on: Sunday 20 September 15 15:35 BST (UK) »
I have fund that my GGG GM was born in Farley Castle in 1777.

Can anyone tell me what or why she would have been born here, please?

I am being lead by the records I have found, so don't know how accurate they are ...

Her name was Amelia Moore, and she was born in 1777, and Married Benjamin Smith in Wiltshire on 10/12/1795, if this helps at all.

Many Thanks

Could be Farleigh Hungerford Castle. It is a ruin and no doubt had habitable cottages or houses in the 18th century

It appears the castle was a ruin in 1777, could she have been born in Castle Farm? See the map at http://maps.nls.uk/view/101460769#zoom=5&lat=1575&lon=4285&layers=BT

There was a baptism at Farleigh Hungerford on 4 May 1777 of a daughter of Isaac and Mary Moore, the daughter's name either illegible or omitted (FreeREG).

Only the census returns, I'm afraid ....

On the 1851 it says Farleigh Castle (FARMERS WIFE OF 30 ACRES) .. on the 1861 it says Farley Castle .. but both b 1777.

I can't find a marriage for an ANN MOORE to unknown LAW ... and it might just be me, but LAW and Moore sound very similar ... but she is shown as Widowed - so I don't know  ???

Amelia was in Pickwick by this point ....
