Origins of William Cawcutt and Elizabeth Foster (Hull c. early 1800s)
« on: Monday 21 September 15 08:31 BST (UK) »
William Cawcutt and Elizabeth Foster married at Holy Trinity Church in Hull in 1825. They had four children baptised there: Mary Ann 1825, George Thomas 1828, and William and Joseph in 1834. The transcribed marriage record gives no details as to William and Elizabeth's parentage, but was wondering if anyone had access to any record that does...or if a baptism for, at least William Cawcutt, could be located. Many thanks!

The basic info on familysearch suggests William was born 1807 (1871 census). Not had a chance to dig any further yet...

Thanks for this everyone!

So we have William Cawcutt marrying Elizabeth Foster 1/11/1825 at Holy Trinity, Hull. They have children:
Mary Ann (bap. 28/11/1825)
George Thomas (bap. 18/2/1828)
Joseph (bur. 22/4/1832)
William (bap. 23/12/1834, dies 1849)
Joseph (bap. 23/12/1834, dies 1857). Seemingly joined on a 'Master and Mate' certificate at port in Hull in 21/1/1856.
John (bap. 10/12/1838). Later marries Maria Whiting 26/12/1859.
Elizabeth Alcott/Elliott (bap. 10/12/1838, d. 13/10/1839)
And then there's another Elizabeth Elliott Cawcutt whose death is registered in the last quarter of 1843.
And a Sarah Ann Cawcutt (see below) born c. 1848.

So, two sets of twins?

William joined the merchant seaman service and served 1845-54 according to some records.

In the 1851 census, the family are at Hamilton PLace on Spencer Street in Hull. ELizabeth is a 44 year old sailor's wife. She is there with two children, Joseph 17 and Sarah Ann 3, giving a birth c. 1848 which can't be found in the HT baptisms. Presumably they've cut off at this point.

In the 1861 census, we have them living at 6 Cottage Place in Holy Trinity. William is a 58 year old London born mariner. Elizabeth is 54 and Sarah (?) Ann is 14.

In 1868, Elizabeth dies "aged 61".

In 1871, William Cawcutt is a border with the Jordan family in HT. He is 64 and dies later that year.
