Seeking information about St. Andrew´s Home
« on: Monday 21 September 15 11:13 BST (UK) »
I have received a copy of a death certificate from 1863, the death was in Windsor.
The place of death being St. Andrew's Home - Clewen when I have correctly read this.

Does anyone know more about the St. Andrew's Home in Windsor?

The place should read Clewer, I have found this link - but no mention of the Home.

There is a list of graves which may help others, my relation is not buried there unfortunately

There were St. Andrews Almshouses in Clewer and St Andrews Hospital, but as far as I can make out these were established and built after 1863.

Thank you for searching Nell :D

On my National Burial Index CD I see that the relation was buried in St Andrews graveyard - but not in the graves list on above link ;)

St. Andrews Church in Clewer is not in the same location as St Andrews Almshouses and Hospital once were.  They were both situated to the south on what is now Clarence Road (B3024) just beyond the crossroads with Hatch Lane & Parsonage Lane.  There was no graveyard there as far as I can see.

The list you provided a link for read, to me, as a survey of gravestones.... so if your person never had one, or it was small/buried/illegible by the early 1980s when somebody compiled that list, then they won't have appeared on that (very short) list at all.

Thank you both for the additional information :D

I will have to search for an O.S. Map from ca 1870 showing Clewer, hoping that would show where the Home and Alms Houses were.
On my list of what I will do the next time I am in the U.K. ;D

You can look at OS maps on the NLS maps site.  This is just one of those available for Clewer:

http://maps.nls.uk/view/105636503

There doesn't seem to be a map available for the early 1860s.  Later maps show the Almshouses, St Andrews Hospital, but NOT St Andrews Home.  :(

Thank you for the link to the OS Maps, Nell :)

I see that the link shows one which was revised in 1897. No earlier edition at the NLS as far as I can see.
