Ross on Wye - 1849/50 Baptism
« on: Wednesday 23 September 15 00:49 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the baptism record of William Morris who was born in Ross on Wye about 1849. His father was named John Morris (Labourer). I can't find anything on Ancestry but i'm not sure whether they have Herefordshire baptisms.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how i could track him short of a visit to Hereford ?
Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy,

I am struggling to find William on Census with Ross on Wye with his pob.

When/where/who did he Marry?

Is his M/C how you got his Fathers name as John a Labourer?

There is a 1849 Birth Reg with Ross Reg District for a William Morris

This seems to be this one;

1851 Census
Pencoyd, Herefordshire
HO107/1976/484/10
John Morris, 42, Head, Mar, Shepherd, born Longistchire, Warwickshire (Long Itchington)
Elizabeth, 36, Wife, Mar, Laundress, born Allenmon, Herefordshire
Elizabeth, 6, Daug, born Walford, Herefordshire
Mary Ann, 4, Daug, born Ross, Herefordshire
WILLIAM, 1, Son, born Pencoyd, Herefordshire****

PENCOYD, a parish in Ross district, Hereford; 5½ miles W N W of Ross r. station.

Baptism from Familysearch.Org;
WILLIAM Morris, 23 Dec 1849 Pencoyd
Parents JOHN/ELIZABETH

Cant find them in 1861 yet but in 1871 in Long Itchington, Warwickshire, we have;

John MORRIS, 55. Head, Widr, Ag Lab**, born Long Itchington
WILLIAM Morris, 21, Son, Unm, Stone Miner, born Pencoyd, Herefordshire***
RG10/3218/143/10

Aaah ;

1861 Census
Chappel End,
Long Itchington, Warwickshire**
RG9/2242/61/14
John MORRIS, 55, Head, Widr, Ag Lab, born Long Itchington, Warwickshire
Emma Morris, 7, Daug, born Long Itchington, Warwickshire
TOM Morris, 11, Son, Plough Boy,  born Pencord, Herefordshire*****

****Image for TOM is WM very widely written out!

Just my possible for your William.

Trish :)

A possibility, family search has a marriage for John Morris to Elizabeth Evans 19 August 1843 in Kingstone, the adjacent parish to Allensmore, which is how I read Elizabeth's birthplace.

There is an  Elizabeth Evans christened in Allensmore in 1814.

Only a possibility.

Hi Trish & mazi,

Thanks for looking. I'm a new boy on this site & unsure of the formalities.

William Morris is a brickwall for me because i can only find scraps of evidence to base a search on. I only have two censuses (1881 & 91) & his marriage record (1880) that i feel confident are for him. I've got his Corby marriage cert.

1880, Marriage, 17 May 1880, Corby C of E, Northamptonshire
William Morris, 30, Bach, Plate Layer, Son of John Morris, Labourer  //  Annie Elizabeth Williamson, 20, Spin, Daughter of William Williamson, Labourer

1881 Census, (Address - 15, Middle Street, Acton All Saints, Middx)
William Morris...............HoH, Age 31, Married, General Labourer.......PoB, HAM GREEN, SURREY
Annie Elizabeth Morris....Wife, Age 21, Married,................................PoB, Corby, Northants

1891 Census, (Address - 33, Eversholt Street, St.Pancras, London)
Wm Morris.................HoH, Age 40, Married, Labourer Round House.....PoB, Herefordshire, Ross
Annie E. Morris...........Wife, Age 31, Married,......................................PoB, Northampton, Corby
Florence T.Morris.........Dau, Age 9......................................................PoB, Middx, Acton
Walter Morris...............Son, Age 1......................................................PoB, London, St.Pancras,
Jessamine Marton (?)....Visitor, Age 27, Single......................................PoB, Rutland, England (?)

You'd have to see the 1891 census to get to grips with this because it is not clear to read. The fifth name, 'Jessamine Marton' or whatever should be a clue here but i can't find her - i've tried a few alternative names for her (Jemima Morris etc) but nowt so far. Her PoB actually says 'Rutlandshire', i think, not 'Rutland, England' as is given. Miss Marton is either a big clue or a red herring.

Obviously, William Morris' PoB is different on the two censuses which is the main problem i have.

William died sometime between 1891 & 1896 because Annie re married in Nov 1896 to a John Alfred Sims of Kettering (1852-1907) at St.Pancras. London.

I've also got the birth cert of son Walter Morris but no special details are given on there.

Someone help me please, i just can't get through this. Three years of looking, what have i missed ?

Cheers,

Brickwalled in Northants.

Hi Claire,

Did you say Hom Green is a place in Herefordshire ?

Just googled it & it sure is - two miles from Ross, they say mmm.

I'm afraid i don't know Herefordshire very well but the 1847 Mary Ann baptism that you have looks mighty tempting. I'll go try it.

Thank you,

Andy

These are just my thoughts,  at his marriage he was a plate layer, likely on the midland railway, in 1891 he was a labourer at the round house St Pancras, possibly the midland railway engine shed, called the round house because it was just that.

In 1891 he says he was born in Ross, if he had no connection to Ross he would never had heard of the place.

Hello Mike,

Top stuff, i thought the 'Round House' was a North London pub ! It's a sign of a misspent youth i'm afraid.

Thanks,

Andy
