150th anniversary of emigration to US: Ryan/Lynch/Butler relatives in Tipp?
« on: Wednesday 23 September 15 20:29 BST (UK) »
My g-grandparents arrived in New York on November 1, 1865 so the 150th anniversary of their emigration is approaching fast.

I've always expected to confirm other branches of our family still living in Tipperary by now, but so far I can't say with 100% confidence that I've been in touch with any direct Ryan, Lynch, or Butler relatives there.

Family names:  RYAN/Michael, b. circa 1820; LYNCH/Bridget, b. 1834; BUTLER/Mary, b. circa 1820.

Michael Ryan/Bridget Lynch lived in Cooneen townland until 1865.  They emigrated with Bridget's father Michael (b. circa 1800) to Pennsylvania, along with Patrick Lynch/Eliza Keyes and Thomas Lynch/Margaret (Mc)Carty.  All men worked as coal miners in the US.

If anyone notices some congruence with their ancestry, please get in touch.

Hi,
Cooneen, is this west of Nenagh and south of Garrykennedy?
Did Mary Butler (b c1820) originate from Clonoulty?

Thanks
Maggsie

Maggsie, that Cooneen is in Castletownarra, I believe.

There is another townland called Cooneen that is southeast of Nenagh, near Dolla.  I'm almost positive my Ryan and Lynch families lived there, because I found my g-grandparents' marriage record and the baptisms of their children in the Templederry RC parish records.

Some time ago, I asked the parish priest whether the records from the "other" Cooneen may have been recorded in that register, and he told me no.

The odd thing is that I can't find my Michael Ryan living in that Cooneen in Griffith's.  There IS a Michael Ryan living there but he leased his acreage until the 1880s, long after my g-grandparents had emigrated.
