Finding information on James Whitfield born about 1696 Headington, Oxford

I am a descendant of James Whitfield, a peruke-maker, b. ca 1696 in Headington, Oxfordshire d. 4 Oct. 1760 in Twickenham, Middlesex m. Anne b. ca 1692 d. bef. 4 Jan. 1749 Twickenham, Middlesex (niece of Robert Cotton, 5th Bart. of Connington). James Whitfield was the son of James Whitfield of Headington listed as a gentleman in James Jr.'s Freedom of Admission Papers to London. I am hoping to find out more about James' ancestry...

Having checked the OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837), there is only one marriage for a James WHITFIELD (also checked WHITEFIELD and WHYTEFIELD) - in 1802 in Oxford.  Additionally, there are no WHITFIELD (or variants as above) marriages in Headington on the index.

The IGI has this baptism:

06 MAR 1691 - Headington - Edward WHITFIELD, son of James

Thanks for the response Pennie, I too noticed Edward son of James. And I also found a William Whitfield son of James born the prior year.

I found none for James. It was the Freedom of Admissions Papers to London that has Headington as his origin - James Jr. was a barber, and became a peruke-maker. He did very well for himself apparently, and had a lot of high profile connections in Twickenham, Middlesex (where he lived), and St. James St. Westminster, Middlesex (where he worked?).
