TAYLOR, KING Orono, Ontario
« on: Thursday 24 September 15 17:19 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Forgive me as it has been a long, long time since I even thought of these folks and I saw them last in childhood. I don't have many details.

My great aunt, Jessie MCGREGOR (1883 - 1980), was a WW1 war bride from Scotland. She married a Canadian soldier, Jack KING (? - 1965), of the 48th Highlanders. They lived for years in Toronto. Had no children. It was Jessie who encouraged my parents to immigrate to Canada and we did so in 1967.

We sometimes attended a family reunion of Jack's extended family at a farm somewhere near Orono. I recall barns, a brick house with a porch, pony riding for the children and lots of people. I am not sure if these folks were of the KING family or the somehow related TAYLOR family. I remember a very elderly lady there, possibly 90 years old, (born 1880-ish?) named Winnie/Winnifred. This was late 1960s - early 1970s. Does any of that sound familiar to anyone?

I know they are inlaws of some sort, but I have a lot of love for some of these people. Aunt Jessie, my great grandmother's sister, was the closest thing I ever had to a grandmother. We had so few relatives in this country and she was wonderful. Ed TAYLOR (who may have been Jessie's brother-in-law?) was employed as a caretaker of some kind for a wealthy family. At Christmas, we received some fabulous toys (full toy kitchen set one year) that had been discarded by the wealthy family. Ed had given them to my parents rather than take them to the dump.

It would be great to learn more about these people or hear from anyone connected, or who remembers these family reunions of 45+ years ago Thank you!

Hello, I have a suggestion and a bit of a long shot. Still a possibility. Do you know if Winnifred was from the Orono area? The Canadian voter's lists are available to search on ancestry and in many libraries, possibly one near you. You could try searching for Winnifred by province Ontario and electorial district Northhumberland-Durham which covers Orono. Maybe you'll turn up a Winnifred with a familiar family name and get an address.
You could also search Taylor in Northhumberland-Durham and hopefully find some in Orono, hopefully a familiar name, jot the addresses and check out the residences to see if they look familiar.
You could also try http://canada411.ca and search Orono, ON with King or Taylor. There may be some descendants still in the area and who will have memories.
Cheers and best of luck, Linda

Suggest you go to www.ourontario.ca and search the newspapers for Orono and Bowmanville.

You could also try the Clarington Public Library if you are in the area - they may have additional materials onsite.  You could also try asking the library directly.  You never know what they might have in a clippings file or local history book.http://www.clarington-library.on.ca/

The Bowmanville branch of the library is offering a session on genealogy and local resources Monday Nov 9,  7:30pm.

Are you sure about the name Jack King ?   Where was Jessie born and who were her parents ?  Did any other member of the McGregor family immigrate to Canada ? Have you located Jessie on a passenger list ?

Have you found obituaries for Jack or Jessie who passed away July 1980 in Toronto ?

From a previous post enquirying about Jessie perhaps being buried at Pine Hill Cemetery  (or you thought it was there) - Have you checked with the Cemetery to see if she is buried there ?
In the same post you indicated that they lived at 22 Goodwood Ave. Toronto --

Notice from Canada Voters List 1957 - 22 Goodwood Avenue Toronto, Ontario (electoral district Davenport)  - Robert King (School Guard) and Jessie King

Is Jessie related to Hugh McGregor you posted about on this thread - looks like you forgot to come back to it.

Could Jessie have been born in 1893 not 1883 ?

Perhaps this could be her with her parents and siblings ?

Angus Mcgregor  17 Hugh Mcgregor  18
Elizabeth Mcgregor  14 Mary Mcgregor  12
Jessie Mcgregor  7 John Mcgregor

Canada Ocean Arrivals shows a Jessie McGregor Lochawe Argyllshire - single - Ardrishaig to Ottawa - Liverpool to Quebec - arriving August 1921 - Empress of France. Father DugMcGregor  Daltote Farm (not very clear) Achnamara via Lochpitphead  ???  Going to a sister Mrs A Dillon, Carleton Avenue, Ottawa West, Ontario.

This sister Mrs A Dillon could be Eliza MGregor who married Allen Dillon in Carleton Ontario 27 June 1917. Parents Dugald McGregor and Margaret MacMillan.  Suspecting many McGregor could be living in Canada - can you confirm for us  ???

Was Jessie married in Canada to "Jack King" ?

Hi,

1911 Canadian Census, Toronto Ontario for Robert King, father Reuben, mother Bertha.
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/View.jsp?id=50874&highlight=29&desc=1911+Census+of+Canada+page+containing+Reuben+King

Robert has a sister Wineford (sp) b. 1896,

Robert's other sister Violet Bertha b. July 14, 1903 marries William Edward Taylor in 1921.
Perhaps this is your Taylor connection.

Excellent - that was a good hunch.  ;)

Perhaps RK might be able to help us out with an obituary for Jessie Munro McGregor/Macgregor who passed away in 1980 Toronto.  ???  This may lead to the Taylor family (which DB has highlighted above  ???
Well done DB - ;D
