FreeBMD/birth register query/problem
« on: Thursday 24 September 15 19:31 BST (UK) »
I can't give the exact details because it concerns a living person, but looking at their birth listing (in 1969) on freeBMD, I notice that it says this (heavily redacted!)

SURNAME    xx    MMN     Place   Vol 1    Page1234   Transcriber's ID
#COMMENT Handwritten amendment to crossed out page 1000

I can bring up a copy of the scan but i can't find any way to get back to page 1000 of the register to see what's there. Any ideas?

thanks in advance!

Have you tried filling in the details but using 1000 for the page at the end of the search boxes?

Under date range there are two boxes  "volume/page".

Thanks, Nanny Jan. I tried that and it did indeed give me some further info -- Sadly it wasn't useful information but I tried and thank you for your help!

Surely page 1000 won't still exist as the new page 1234 supercedes it?

The "#comment" indicates that the freebmd transcriber had a 'problem' interpreting the data when entering it. They have to transcribe what they see and sometimes what is in the index doesn't fit into the freebmd transcribers boxes.

I would suggest that the original birth entry was amended in some way and the GRO index now reflects this with reference to another entry.

Was the child born to unmarried parents who later married?

Do points 13m and 13n here help?

The child was later adopted and maybe that's the reason for some alteration - I don't know.

There is no way of linking an entry in the birth register with an entry in the adopted childrens index due to the sensitive nature of adoptions.
