William Heatlie-watch maker in berwickshire
« on: Friday 25 September 15 18:41 BST (UK) »
Hi all
I am looking for the above William Heatlie after 1841. I have him in 1841 living in Dunse Berwickshire aged 50 with his sister Margaret Heatlie, William was a watch maker but I cannot find a death record for either of them after this date either pre 1854 or in statutory records after 1855. They were both alive in 1847 as they where executors in their brother James Heatlies will and inventory but nothing after that. I have found a website for a Scottish Longcase clock made by Heatlie and Sheridan in Dunse but that doesn't give any clues. Any help appreciated.
Thanks Dawn

He still appears to be alive in 1851 aged 63 (remember ages were rounded down in 1841 so would show as aged 50 then) and transcribed as Hately - he is now a House Propr. and has acquired a 24 year old wife shown as Marion.

Found a William Heatlie married Mary Horne, dau. of Thomas Horne, 7/1/1848 Duns, Berwickshire.

1841 address is New Town Street (no numbers) and in 1851 117 New Town Street.

Can't find his sister Margaret in 1851 but in 1861 she's transcribed as Margaret Halely 65, occupation  Fundholder.

Did William and Margaret inherit property when their brother James died?

Cannot find any further trace of William and his young wife after 1851.

I think this might be Margaret. However there is a baptism for William same father and place but 1783?

One possibility, adding to what has been found so far by everyone. In will & testaments on SP, there is this entry:

William HEATLIE    - 22/12/1853 - FEUAR IN DUNSE - I AND DISPOSITION AND SETTLEMENT @ DUNS SHERIFF COURT INVENTORIES   SC60/41/14 - 9 pages

Also, two different documents in August 1853 on same database for an Adam HEATLIE and HEATLEY from CRUICKSFIELD, PARISH OF BUNKLE, BERWICK. D.03/07/1853.

William, Margaret and (brother James) were born in Bunkle and were children of Hector Heatlie and Agnes Purves:

William born 15/7/1787
James born 20/8/1789
Margaret born 1/4/1792

(Forgot to show that when William Heatlie married Mary in 1848 he is described as a 'Feuar').

Hi Annette,
I thought that might be the case. So not Margaret in 1851.

With your info, Annette, that looks promising for that Will & Testament entry then.

Hi all
Thanks for all your replys, Annette you where correct Williams parents were Hector Heatlie and Agnes Purves. I checked out the I and desposition settlement for William Heatlie, feuar, on the SP site and he mentions both his sister Margaret (married name Paterson) and his deceased brother James Heatlie who was a sessions clerk. I found a marriage for a Margaret Heatlie and John Patterson and her parents where as confirmed for William, Hector Heatlie and Agnes Purves.
Thanks for all you help you have helped to fill a big hole.

Gosh, Margaret sister married late for the first time.

Great that you got there, Dawn  :)

Just curious, what mention was there of his young wife?
