George L Gooch.
« on: Friday 25 September 15 20:48 BST (UK) »
George was born in Cowlinge, Suffolk in 1826. Married Martha Slack of Wicken at Wicken 2nd Oct 1850. Farmed 250 acres and was a Miller in Cheveley. Death recorded as Risbridge, 1865.
I have found 4 references to his middle name, two said Langley and two said Lingley. Can anyone give me any info about him, particularly a definitive middle name. I haven't come across a relative with either spelling.
Was there a mill in Cheveley? If so does anyone know where.
His children were:-
Martha Slack Gooch Birth 1851 • Cheveley,   Death Dec 1918 • Bury St Edmunds
George L Gooch 1853–
Mary Layton Gooch 1855–
Harriet Gooch 1857–
Elizabeth Gooch 1859–
Arnold Gooch 1861–
Clara Gooch 1864
Any info about the family will help. Many thanks.
Burt, Cockrill, Craske, Debenham, Double, Grimwade, Grimwood, Hilder, Mayhew, Ray. All from  West Suffolk around the Bury St. Edmunds area.
Simpson, Pittendreigh, Arthur.   Aberdeenshire

The full GRO index has 2 entries with the 2 different spellings

What does his marriage cert say?  If he signed the register - how did he sign his middle name?

Death reg shows Lingley

Middle name registered as Lingley - see freebmd and he married as George Lingley in 1872 - see freebmd

Thanks to both of you. That certainly seems to settle his middle name in favour of Lingley.

Hi again, I looked for any further baptisms of Gooch children by John & Susanna and their were no others with a middle name, with the exception of Susanna Mason Gooch 26th May 1816 Cowlinge John occ Miller
Marriage John Gooch Yngr to Susanna Mason 23rd March 1814 Cowlinge

Thanks so much Keyboard86 it has helped me advance that family tree with very useful information. I will need to go to the records office to see if I can find some burial details, but not sure whether to go to Suffolk or Cambs. Still need to track some of the daughters and see if they were married. George is out in the twigs of my paternal tree on one of my gt grandmother's line, but still very worth researching.
