WILLIAM BRANDISH - Alive but can't find him on the census...
« on: Sunday 27 September 15 20:16 BST (UK) »
I've been tracing William Brandish, born in Salford 1850. On the 1901 census, his wife Alice appears as head of household, but as married rather than widowed. I'm pretty sure I've found William on the deaths index (unusual surname, died in Salford, right age) in 1904. So where was he in 1901?  He worked in a cotton mill, so it seems very unlikely that he'd have been out of the country.  I've checked the indexes on both Ancestry and Find my Past with no success. I wondered about a hospital or similar, but of course he should still be on the census. I may have to see if the death certificate will throw any light, but before I spend money on that, just wondered if anyone had  any ideas?

If he was in an asylum - he would only be shown under his initials in 1901

Really? So he would have just been listed as WB? That's  one possibility then.  Thankyou Carole.

Your subject above shows him as James Brandish but I notice his death was William

RG13 Piece 3992 Folio 84  starts at page 86 and will give you Lancaster Asylum but you will then have to work your way backwards through the pages

Being honest - it's probably easier to wait for the death cert

Thanks for pointing that out - sorry, it's WILLIAM. I was looking at his father James as well last night. I think you're right - it's going to need the death certificate - I'm intrigued enough to pay for it.

The Boer War is another possibility.

True, dates are right. But did older men enlist? He was 50 in 1900.

There were some soldiers in their fifties. Also I noted that he was an engineer (presumably a steam engineer) per the 1881 and 1891 censuses: I don't know whether civilian engineers were brought to South Africa to support the military effort but it struck me as a possibility.

Thanks Shaun. Will look into that possibility.
