After looking at the previous information and comparing it to a map, it seems to me that from Welford in 1771 to Spratton in 1798 and then Brackley from about 1808 covers a lot of territory. What do people think about that range of movement in relatively early days? The names and events seem convenient, but could that be only because we don't know of others more closely located?

I wondered if it might be an indication of a travelling family (they were later shown to be basket makers), but I know of no evidence other than the distances involved.

Of course, maybe the map I'm looking at makes it all seem further.

Didy

There are very few Burgoynes in Northamptonshire only 10 baptisms between 1750 and 1812.

John and Mary baptized one child in Spratton in 1800 and 8 more in Brackley from 1803-1818

This is the summary of what I have found or been told about John & Mary Burgoyne and their family in Northamptonshire (without going back to their own origins):

John Burgoine married Mary Satchel 18 Feb 1798, Spratton.

John Burgoyne buried 30 Dec 1835, Brackley. Aged 60.
Mary Burgoyne buried 16 Jan 1848, Brackley. Aged 66.

CHILDREN:
Susanna Burgoine,   29 Dec 1803,   Brackley
Susanna    “   buried 23 Jun 1813 Brackley. Aged 9.
Selinda     "         20 Oct 1805        “
Lewis      “     20 Mar 1807        “
Frederick   “     21 Dec 1808      “
Joseph Burgoin     29 Jul 1811        “
Susanna    "        10 Oct 1813        “
John      “     29 Oct 1815        “
Maler      “     19 Feb 1818        “

I would be very grateful to have the details of the child born at Spratton, mgeneas. Have I missed any others that you are aware of?

"Lewis" is the name I found on FreeReg, but I see him referred to elsewhere as Levi, which doesn't seem compatible with the other family names. I'm also aware that his birthdate seems to indicate that he is the James Burgoyne found in London from the 1820s, with a Brackley birthplace on most later censuses. Does anyone have access to the original register entry? I'm wondering if the "Lewis" is an interpretation of what could be James in the original script.

I'm also curious about that "Maler". I've never come across it before. Could it be something else?

Diana

I wonder why he became James, if that is indeed him - James's age varies a few years from census to census and I guess it was possible for him to have been born between Frederick and Joseph.

I have looked at the PR images on Anc'y for Maler, and the name is quite clear, but I wonder where it comes from.
