Is he a Brother  of either your mother or your father?

My reason for asking that is  to establish  that he is a direct  "blood"  relative and NOT   an "in-law"

If he has been dead for more than 25 years it will not matter.

You will need his death certificate; unless he died in service.
(presumably the Forces think that's proof enough?)

Sorry to hijack this thread
Who would you define as next of kin to a man who had no children and his siblings are also dead  :-\
I am looking at this family
Boy bn 1915 has two children eldest bn 1950
Girl bn 1917 has one child bn 1945
Boy bn 1920 who has no children and is the one I want records for

Does the nephew born 1945 take priority over the one born 1950  :-\

The form to be downladed from the MOD site is entitled:
Application Form Part 1 for Next of Kin or Enquirers with the Consent of Next of Kin

and states:
This form can be used by any applicant to provide evidence that the consent of the immediate next of kin has been given for them to be provided with the information from the Record of Service that would normally be withheld from other than the immediate next of kin for the first 25 years following the death of the deceased subject.

There are boxes in which to mark a cross:
Spouse/Civil Partner
Son/Daughter
Grandchild
Father/Mother
Brother/Sister
Nephew/Niece
Grandparent
Other (Please specify)

I was just querying really as to whether nieces/nephews take any sort of priority as nok, I know they are equal when wills are administered.  It is just that the eldest one would not allow me to apply if I asked them.  ::)
