It is possible that Jane was illegitimate & born by surname Malone.

Annie

Hi Annie,

as Annette7 and DebPat both suggested I think it very possible (probable) that Jane was illegitimate and I have done many searches under the Malone name and even under Clark as well as McLeod way before I got on to Rootschat.  Maybe I'm doing something wrong in my searches but probably I am just rubbish but I will not give up.  I'll find something eventually  :-\

Yes her husband William is easy to search but my aunt is not interested in him, just the mystery of her mother.  Typical!   :D
I have searched some of his easy docs and yes Sarah Fraser was illegitimate etc ....

I'll reply to your pm questions by your email as advised.

Kate

Annie

:)  Thanks DebPat but I already have it!  Went and did SP searches after your post and got aways back very easily.

Hi Kate,

I'm wondering if you have used the "soundex" or "variants" options for the name Malone as the spelling could be very different.

You would also have to stretch your window of search to include a couple of yrs either side as her birth may have been at the end of a yr but not indexed until the following yr.

Was there (to your knowledge) any mention of where she was born as that would be a huge help?

Annie.

As her children knew so little about her, and did not understand the Gaelic language, how do they know that it was actually "Gaelic" she was speaking? Might the Gaelic be a red herring?  :-\

Kate,

Just picking up from Ruskie's question.

Was it in Jane's latter years with dementia, she only spoke gaelic or had she always spoken gaelic and never, ever spoke english?

Hi Annie,

Jane was an English speaker until the end when she suddenly spoke Gaelic.  A surprise to her children because they didn't know she spoke it.

Yes I've tried all the different search options even the * option someone mentioned, though that one didn't seem to work, also a wide time range just in case resulting in 100's (1,000's) of results and with no idea what area = impossible.
I'm hoping all my questions will provoke them to think on it and hopefully some tiny little thing might surface.  (it's worked on people in the past)

Age given as 19, living with McIntosh family

Strangely she shows as just Margaret Malone in the index transcription

There are 2 possible births for Jane

1904 MALONE JANE at ST ANDREW (DUNDEE) DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS

1908 MALONE JANE at ST PETER DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS

Sancti, just adding one more to your Dundee list for births of a Jane:

Jane Ann MALONEY 1907 St Andrews, Dundee

I think, from my own notes from earlier, the 1904 Jane born in Dundee did have mother Margaret, but mother married and maiden name Gourley.

Things not adding up........

In 1928 when Jane McLeod married she was 21 born c1907…..

so M J Malone in Perth 1901 aged 19 (c1882) can’t be her surely?

Thought I would also add that I had Mellon's in Dundee, a nightmare to find with variants of Melone/Mallon etc.

Monica...............it was you who found my g g/father's birth in Glasgow although he'd been living in Dundee.

Not the easiest of names Malone/Mellon but they were Irish & seems a lot of Irish ended up in Dundee so kind of makes you wonder if it was Irish gaelic after all?

Annie

EDIT............forgot to add, has anyone found Margaret Clark/Clarke McLeod in 1901 or prior?
