Can't open .ged file!
« on: Wednesday 30 September 15 03:22 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I am currently trying to open a .ged file on my computer but I can't open it. I have a mac and a Windows computer and I can't open it on either. I have family tree maker 2012 (ancestry) but the .ged file but it keeps popping up saying my .ged file must be 5.5 or greater. How do I open it?  ??? I have 3000+ names on the family tree I'm trying to open and I can't afford to lose it!  I have a family reunion coming up and I need to print it out for family members.

Thanks for the help!

With what version, of what software, did you make the Gedcom file?

You need to use that software, I think, to open the file?

Hi

Suggestion. . . . .
Make a copy of the file.
Rename it to anything.txt
Open it in Notepad/wordpad/word/w.h.y.
Copy/paste the first 50 lines into this thread.

Hi noy1818

"I have 3000+ names on the family tree I'm trying to open and I can't afford to lose it!  I have a family reunion coming up and I need to print it out for family members."

I notice that you were logged into Rootschat today, have you solved the problem?
There is help available, please make contact, your file problem is almost certainly "fix-able".

Regards
Ray

Hi Ray & KGarrad,

So I haven't replied yet, left Rootschat on while tying to fix it! Haven't fixed it yet, but I think I'm almost there. I am not sure what i used to create the files, as it was about 5 years since I last opened them as I transferred a lot of files onto another drive when I got my new computer. I've had a read through the other older thread on the same topic but have had no luck yet. I might attach a pic so you can see whats going on (or what I'm doing wrong!)

Hi

If you follow the instructions (in this thread) then it may(should) tell you what created it.

Hi Ray, I followed your advice and I think the only reason it's not working is that all the text were in boxes and placed all over the page. It doesn't seem to be picking up the boxes, only the text. Although I have all the names from the family tree, they are all in a mixed up order! Not sure if I can fix this now ???

Hi

I cannot help you if you do not specifically provide an answer to my query.

I am still willing to attempt to help you. . . . .

Regards,

Ray
