Sorry Ray, I'm trying to not be too confusing. Just re read over your post-
Make a copy of the file.
Rename it to anything.txt
Open it in Notepad/wordpad/word/w.h.y.
Copy/paste the first 50 lines into this thread.

and didn't notice the last part (sorry)   :'( I couldn't copy the first 50 lines as the people mentioned are still alive (Rootschat policy) so here is another 50 lines...

Maybe not the first 50 lines, but certainly the first 15 or 20!

That's where all the file version information usually lies.

My example:
0 HEAD
1 SOUR RootsMagic
2 NAME RootsMagic
2 VERS 4.0
2 CORP RootsMagic, Inc.
3 ADDR PO Box 495
4 CONT Springville, UT 84663
4 CONT USA
3 PHON 1-800-ROOTSMAGIC
3 WWW www.RootsMagic.com
1 DEST RootsMagic
1 DATE 11 FEB 2013
1 FILE Garrad.ged
1 GEDC
2 VERS 5.5.1
2 FORM LINEAGE-LINKED
1 CHAR UTF-8
0 @I1@ INDI

So I can tell from that I created the file using RootsMagic, version 4.0, and the version of Gedcom is 5.5.1
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)
