Sorry Geoff
Had a look at step father's Frank military records WWI and Mary Compton was single when they married at the Register office at Wolverhampton in 15.2.1910.
He does count Wilfred as his son on his attestation papers  but on the 1911 he's down as step son.
So unless there's a father on the birth certificate don't see how you'll find him.

Sorry

Hello
There's does seem to be a lot of records for Frank Harpin.
To start with he joins the South Staffs Regiment no 2367.23 June 1914
Born Heath Town 1880 ,collier Essington colliery address 3court High St Wednesfield.
He has been with the South Staffs before and it looks like he has been called up from the territorial army.
He is 5ft 91/2 inches and in good physical health.
Made Corporal 20.7.1914 ,posted 23.6.1914 ,he requested to be discharged and was 28.9.1914 being medically unfit.
He has a wife Mary and a son Wilfred
There then comes an application from the Army Services Corps for a pension 14.4.1918 for myalgia lumber region.
Wilfred Bernard is named as his son born 15.6.1908 ,birth certificate checked and an award of an extra 2'62 given.
Marriage Mary Compton spinster at Registery Office Wolverhampton 15.2.1910.
3.9.1919 he's worse and it's increased 8' himself 8'9 for wife and 3'6 for child(ren).
28.1.1920 reduced to 1'4 for child,and 5'6
His discharge 13.4.1918 makes him41 5'9 tattoos both arms, chest and shoulders.
His medical report says he has rheumatism in his back since 1912 and his service has made it worse and he is now in hospital.25.3.1918.Also in both knee joints.50% disabled.
He had rejoined at Romsey 12.5.1915 and there's a complicated list of different duties, promotion to Corporal again and back to Pte ,but it's so scrawlly it's impossible to read most of it.
It looks like poor Frank was in quite a lot of pain.
