Thomas Ballenger
« on: Wednesday 30 September 15 12:09 BST (UK) »
Thomas Ballenger/Ballinger was born in 1810 to William Ballenger and Dinanah Cuss. He was baptised at Down Ampney on 21 Oct 1810.

He married Mary Alloway/Holloway on 22 Mar 1831 at Latton, Wiltshire.

The couple appear in the 1841 census living at Back Edge, Painswick, Stroud (HO107 349 7 5 5) with their children William (11), James (6), George (5) and Mary (2).

They also appear in the 1851 census living at Edge, Painswick, Stroud (HO107 1964 179 32) with their children George (15), Mary A (13), Sarah (7) and E (4).

After this the family disappear. I cannot find a trace of any of them. So any help gratefully received.

It could well be, as there is a corresponding Gloucestershire baptism.

Elizabeth BELLINGER baptised 20 Sep 1846 at Painswick, Gloucestershire. Parents Thomas and Mary Bellinger.

Many thanks

I'm still finding it difficult to locate the family in 1861. I suppose either Thomas or Mary could have died between 1851 or 1861, but I can't find an appropriate death for either of them.

I have tried searching for the children in 1861, but have not located any with certainty.

So help still very much needed!

Have found the birth and baptism of Mark James. He is clearly another child for Thomas and Mary, so thanks very much for finding him.

However, I can't find any record of him after his baptism in Feb 1852. I tried the 1861 census to no avail. Nor can I find an early death between 1851 and 1861.

Any ideas?

Have you looked on this site and any others to see if anyone else is researching the same family?

Are you suspecting that they emigrated as a family, or a surname change, or in 1861 living elsewhere and on a missing piece of the 1861 census?

Looking at Genuki Painswick from the Gazetter 1868 (as Thomas was a cloth worker...)

'a portion of the inhabitants are engaged in the manufacture of woollen cloth, although compartively on the decline'

Would think the family moved elsewhere for work - abroad?

Coaley.net

http://www.coaley.net

Gives the Gloucestershire Population tables (1801 to 1901 - Under the Heading: LOCAL HISTORY)  and for Painswick in 1841, 3,730 : 1851 there were 3,464 and in 1861, 3,229

There is also on the above website : a Hand Loom Weaver's Report 1837-1841 which if you click on - mentions Painswick 9 times - giving the number of families employed in Painswick - also the Minister of Painswick in deprecating the evil of beer shops etc.

May be there is a marriage at Painswick after 1851 where Thomas was a witness - which may give a later date - The Forest of Dean records doesn't include Painswick - but searching for witnesses often gives information.

Looking at the Gloucestershire Genealogical Database: Goal

Thomas BALLINGER of Painswick - 27 December 1841 aged 29 c1812

Ancestry Gaol Records may show what he 'got up to'

May be he re-offended and 'did a runner' or even change the family name?
