William Gibson dob abt 1773
« on: Wednesday 30 September 15 23:50 BST (UK) »
Hi. I hope someone can help me locate any information on William Gibson. He was born in approximately 1.773.  He was from County Down, Ireland and was married to Isabella. They had several sons: James, Charles, Andrew, Adam, Thomas, and Joseph.  They left Ireland approx 1834 for the United States. He apparently was a tailor while in Ireland and later became a farmer in Delaware County, NY. I've been chasing various leads but can't quite pin anything down. One bit of information suggested that he may have possibly lived in Moneyslane, Drumgooland. Thanks for any and all information

Hi again

They appear to be on http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=115618093&ref=acom  If you click the link to the cemetery and type in just the surname Gibson it brings up all the Gibsons buried there. The cemetery link Gilchrist United Presbyterian Cemetery (to click on I mean but could try the others surrounding?

Thanks Janine!

Yes! William Gibson died January 31, 1851. I have actually visited his gravesite at Gilchrist Church in Kortright, NY. Isabella, Charles, and several of their children are buried there as well. I have only recently re-subscribed to Ancestry.com and did not realize a copy of his will was there.

I had in my records that he crossed on the Portsmouth but did not have all of the details of all of the  family members who accompanied him on the trip and their occupations. This is fantastic!

According to my records, I don't believe that William had a daughter.  I believe the Sarah Gibson that came over on the Portsmouth was possibly James' wife (Sarah Whigham Gibson) and the Sarah on the 1850 census was Charles's wife (born in Dutchess County, NY).

I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly! You have been so helpful!

BallyaltikilliganG,
Thank you so much. I had certainly hit a wall when I tried to determine just where in Ireland my ancestors were from. These links look promising.  Hopefully they will lead me to the correct "William Gibson" as there are so many!
Thanks again!
