Thanks for the info about your William F.
From Lorna’s site Fairbairn.lornahen.com it looks like he fits in the 1a1 lineage under George & Christian (Bookles) Fairbairn  m 1687 Cockburnspath. This is one of the oldest lines documented.

I descended from the 1b4b lineage Robert & Elizabeth (Crosbie) Fairbairn m 1790 Smailholm. This is a large separation from your William.
