Castlemorton Headstone
« on: Thursday 01 October 15 08:07 BST (UK) »
Researching my OHs ancestor William Hawker who supposedly married Hannah Ball c1783 at St. Gregorys Church, Castlemorton, we visited the spot yesterday. An old headstone near the church door mentioned a Mary Hawker and a William Hawker of a slightly later generation. It was difficult to read because of ivy and wear and tear. However, I was intrigued by a carving of a large star on the top of the headstone. Does this mean that the family were Jewish by any chance?

Judy,
William Hawker and Hannah Bell certainly did marry there, 22 Jan 1783 (FamilySearch).

Thank you Peter for your interest in my query.

I have had permission from Charles Sale of Gravestones Photos to post the following image which shows, just about, the 6 point star.

Can anyone give me some suggestions as to why it should be on this headstone? I should really appreciate it.

Thank you.
