D'Arcy BARNES
« on: Thursday 01 October 15 12:39 BST (UK) »
D'Arcy Barnes was born in 1842 to William Barnes and Martha Foster in Wisborough Green, Sussex. He was brought up mostly in Godalming, Surrey.

He found work as a groom. In 1861 he was a visitor at Biggs Lodge, Neasden.

At sometime in the 1860s he married or got together with Emma Monk, though I have yet to find a marriage. According to the 1841 and 1851 censuses, Emma was born in 1837 in Ampthill, Bedfoedshire, her family moving to Fulbourn, Chesterton, Cambs in time for the 1851 census.

In 1865 it would appear that the couple had a child, William Joseph Barnes (Q2 1865 Chesterton 3b 504).

In 1871 I can't find the couple, but by 1881 they are living with in-laws at 1 Cavendish Terrace, Cambridge. He is a retired coachman. Both their ages are wildly wrong.

In 1891, the couple are living in Fulham Palace Road, London, where he is working as a coachman.

By 1901, D'Arcy and Emma are back in Cambridge running an Inn on South Street. He now admits to being 59.

In April 1903, D'Arcy marries his second wife, Marguerite Penning in Lambeth. By 1911 the couple are in Herne Bay, Kent. He is working as a caretaker at a pet shop.

Finally, in 1921 he dies in Blean, Kent.

So I know a reasonable bit about him, but what I can't find is:

(a) details of his marriage to Emma
(b) their location in 1871.

All help gratefully received.

Have you managed to trace the son ?  He does not seem to be with the family in later census forms
He was obviously still living in 1881

Looks right. Joseph and Ann were his grandparents, according to Emma's baptism.

The absence of James and Emma is very puzzling. They have obviously gone off somewhere, perhaps looking for work, leaving William with his grand-parents.

I'm guessing that they won't be in Cambridgeshire, otherwise William would surely be living with them.

Could they have fallen on hard times? Workhouse?
