Adam Haldane b 1866 Dalkeith
« on: Friday 02 October 15 17:10 BST (UK) »
Hello - I am researching for a friend and looking for some help with this family.  First of all the  marriage of Adam Haldane to Ellen (Helen) McClosky (possibly born Glasgow) - first child was born in 1889 so dates around this.  First 2 children Helen and Janet are born in Scotland then they move to London where he becomes a Police Constable.  Wife's name comes from the death certificate of a daughter Elspeth who died in USA.

Also is there any record in Scotland of the marriage of daughter Joan Haldane (b1899) to a (Thomas Bell) late teens/early 20s - he could possibly have been from Fife. Can't find a marriage in England so wonder if she married in Scotland.  My friend says she had a cousin Nellie Bell (Ellen/Helen) who lived in Scotland so hoping this may be the family.
Many thanks for any help.
Regards Sue

They married in 1888 in Lasswade ( reg district for Dalkeith). Adam is down as Adam Hadden ( the family also appear under this alternative of Haldane in the 1881 census). He married Ellen Mccluskey.

Hi, a few backward looking bits......

Marriage:
Robert Haldane & Janet Jack married 22 September 1865 in Dalkeith, Midlothian (Adam's parents)

James Mclusky & Ellen Mcarney married 23 October 1853 in Gorbals, Laarkshire (Ellen's parents)
* Ellen's father James was deceased at the time of her marriage to Adam.

children born to Robert & Janet (Jack) Haldane:
Adam born 15 June 1866 Dalkeith
Elspeth Johnston born 15 December 1868 Dalkeith
Jane Menzie born 17 August 1871 Newbattle
Isabella Jack born 5 April 1874 Newbattle
Abraham Jack born 14 November 1881 Lasswade

children born to James & Ellen (Mcairney/Mcarney) McCluskey:
John born 7 January 1856 High Church, Glasgow
Joseph born 12 July 1857 Blythswood, Glasgow
Mary Ann born 19 August 1859 Blythswood, Glasgow
Ellen born 29 December 1861 Glasgow Central
Francis born 29 December 1861 Glasgow Central (twin to Ellen)
Phillip born 7 February 1864 Milton, Glasgow
Patrick born 15 October 1865 Milton, Glasgow
Ellen born 27 September 1867 Milton, Glasgow
John born 25 August 1869 Milton, Glasgow
Patrick born 25 February 1871 Milton,Glasgow
Margaret born 1 March 1873 Milton, Glasgow
* the 1st of these named children Patrick, John & Ellen probably died in infancy which sadly was a regular occurrence.

Hope this helps, Kim

Many thanks Isobel and Kim for your help.
Can I just go back to Rose Haldane m to ........Bell (Thomas)? and her death in 1985 - can you put dates/places on these 2 events?  Also I am looking for more information on their child/children.  My friend had a cousin Nellie (Ellen/Helen) Bell a bit younger than her so born before 1926.  She has a photo of them together but lost contact a long time ago - is there any information on her birth/marriage/death?  Unclear whether she was an only child.
Your help is invaluable - I have never had to look at Scottish records before so was finding it a bit tricky - any advice on finding records would be much appreciated.  Regards Sue
