Help with place name - Douglas, Wales
« on: Sunday 04 October 15 13:10 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters

I have a family member who was born in Wales and on his prison record in Ireland it says he was born in Douglas, Wales.
Birth records point to him being born in Merthyr T.  Dennis Morris Collins, Merthyr T. 1888.

Does anyone know where Douglas is??
I thought it might be an english translation of a Welsh name?

Thanks
lyndo

 ;D ;D ;D ;D  Thank you Osprey.

I reckon you have it.

That really helps me with searching for RC baptisms in the area.

Hi
1891 Census gives place of birth as, Dowlais, Glamorganshire. Elizabeth, the mother also born there; father (name not clear) born Ireland.

father's name is Daniel on 1891 census.

Some records for St Illtyd's in Dowlais are on FreeReg, but searching on Collins, only burials show up.

I noticed on your other thread that you said there wasn't an RC church in Dowlais. There definitely was. As the Anglican was the established church at that time in Wales, you need to look at the list of non-conformist churches to see what else there was

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/MerthyrTydfil/Chapels.html

http://www.alangeorge.co.uk/St.Illtyd'sChurch.htm

and there was St Mary's, Tramroad, George Town & another St Mary's, The Walk, Brecon Road that opened its doors in 1894.

That's really good osprey.

My family history centre is closed for school holidays at present, but when they open again I will see if they have films available for me to look through from  those churches that you have given me.

Great to see those St.Llityd photos. Always easier to imgine the ancestors better when you can see the type of clothing, hair cut styles etc.
