Shandbody in Clackmannanshire
« on: Sunday 04 October 15 17:01 BST (UK) »
Can someone help me find the location of Shandbody? I suspect it was the name of a very small rural area, even the name of a farm, but I can't find it on an of the old maps. Had a distant relative, George Drysdale, living there in 1841. Thanks.

Ancestry and Freecen have the address down as Shandbody for this individual but it is down as Hartshaw on Findmypast. Don't know if this helps.

Hi Isobel, this is the best lead I have had. Its conceivable that the name Shandsbody was dropped and the farm/place was renamed Hartshaw Farm. I've found the name Shandsbody elsewhere, but there is never a location given. Uggh.
Thank you for your help. Noel

Using the Register of Testaments as a starting point we can establish that Shandbody was within the parish of Clackmannan.

The 1841 Census has several houses listed as occupied in Shandbody; the next entries are in the tiny hamlet of Kilbagie, now known only as the name of a roundabout linking the A977 Clackmannan Bridge road to the A876. Presumably Shandbody was somewhere in that vicinity, which might make it easier to narrow your search for an old map

Thanks for your insight.
It appears to me that the name may have changed in recent times and what was Shandbody may now be Hartshaw Farm.

From a look at a map that seems unlikely to me, I'm afraid.

If Hartshaw farm is where the OS Map seems to say it is, there are a couple of miles and a number of small farms and settlements between it and Kilbagie (Meadowend, Gartarry and others), yet the 1841 Census runs on the same page straight from Shandbody onto Kilbagie, whichj implies they are fairly close.

Hi
Shanbody is shown on John Thomson's map of 1823 of Perthshire and Clackmannanshire on the road from Clackmannan to Tulliallan just before the county border.

Charlie:
Perfect! Many thanks. The maps I checked were not early enough. I'll do more checking now to see if that name still exists, or if it has been changed since 1832.
It fits perfectly with the other information I have about this person. I'm very grateful to you, and to the others who so quickly responded to my request for help.
Cheers
