Glasgow Police Records
« on: Monday 05 October 15 12:25 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if it is possible to look up Glasgow police records c1900. I have an ancestor who seems to have been in a bit of bother with the law and was referred to the poor house
Scollay - Shetland (Sjovald line)
Odie - Shetland
Bannon - Belfast
Donaghy - Belfast/Derry
Rooney - Belfast
McManus- Belfast

In theory, yes, it is, but I am not sure the police records are what you want. If your ancestor was referred to the poorhouse you are more likely to find him/her in the parochial board records ('Poor Law' records) which can be consulted in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for your reply.

I have already got the poor law record and it lists the dates of the encounters with the police. I was just looking to see if the police information was available

Ah.

I think I would ask the staff at the Glasgow Archives where to go from there.

How badly was he in trouble with the law? Is this likely to be of any interest?:

Another idea...depending on how naughty were his encounters with the Glasgow Constabulary...

You mention you have dates etc. You could have a look at the Glasgow Herald perhaps. Free to view here https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC&hl=en

You need to search by date/issue here.

Paid for services, where you can use key words on the search include www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/
