According to his Will James was "of" Highfield House, Pemberton, near Wigan. Usually the index states and address and where people die if different. Died 23 February 1906.

Yes, he definitely didn't leave the family permanently, which is why I was puzzled by his absence on census night. There are rather a lot of James Hiltons, so checking through the indexes would take some time.
