I'm new to this forum and haven't a clue how to go about tracing Italian ancestors.  Has anyone tried it and can they direct me?  Thanks

budegirl1,
I started a posting "Italian Research" and have helped some members obtain B/M/D certificates from Italy.  I live here in Italy.
If you post some names and dates and what you are looking for I may be able to help you.

Hi supermags,
I have a posting under "Italian Research" where I try and help others find B/M/D certificates  in Italy.  Sometimes successful and sometimes not as you will see from the various postings.

Have written to the Genova Archives which covers the area of Mezzanego as the town halls have only records after the unification of Italy.  See what they can find or suggest.  I know for a fact that the Genova Archives are short of staff and it might take sometime.

Curiosity, the Boggiano Family hales from Mezzanego and Campovecchio di Borgonovo in the Valle Sturla.  These towns lie in the Hills above Chiavari and Lavagna.  All in the Province of Genova(Genoa).  Coincidence also back in the 1980's I worked in Chiavari with a guy  called Boggiano, but have lost all contact.

Steve

PS.  If possible can the Moderator move this posting to "Italian Research".

Hi

Most parts of Italy only have civil registration documents after the unification of Italy. Before this time you often have to search for parish records. But as far as I know they are usually not held by the State archives. But some towns also have Civil registration documents of the time of Napoleon. At familysearch I can see that the State Archives of Genova have Civil registration documents 1796-1812, 1838-1859, 1866-1899. But maybe this is only for the City of Genova (I couldn't find a record of your Pietro Boggiano online).

Hi supermags,
Just got a reply from the Genova Archives.
They do hold some documents prior to the Unification, but not those of Mezzanego.  Suggested I write to the "Diocesi di Chiavari" who might have some records.  Done that and wait and see what they have to say.
I did  write an e-mail to the local Church in Mezzanego a few days ago and it came back not known.  So I telephoned and got an irate woman who told me that "this is'nt the Church and there is no number and slammed the phone down on me"!!  Could be the Church no longer functions.  So wait for Chiavari now.
