I now have the birth Certificate for Ellen Jane Wyatt and it looks promising.

Her mother was Sarah Wyatt and her address is Bishops Lydeard and occupation is Domestic Servant.  Date of Birth is 20 April 1874 but not registered until 16 July 1874.

I have found Sarah Wyatt in 1871 in Bishops Lydeard as a scullery maid in Sandhill House, seems to be a very large place.  In 1861 she is Sarah Whyatt, daughter of William And Sarah Whyatt, who are the grandparents of Ellen Jane in 1881. but in the name of Wyatt.

I am now trying to find Sarah Wyatt after 1871.

A Sarah Wyatt marries John Keirman,  Taunton District Q1 1880.

John Keirman with family in 1871 census in East Reach in Taunton...can't find any of them , or John & Sarah anywhere in 1881?!

Great news Neatwheat -- just what we were looking for.

We wanted Ellen Jane to be illegitimate - as it's one more piece of probable evidence pointing towards Ellen Jane and Gertrude Ellen being one and the same person!

That must be really exciting for you after all this time. Thank you for the update.

I've now found John Keirnan with wife Sarah in 1881....probably not the Sarah we are looking for as she was born in Hemyock, Devon in 1836!!

Back to the drawing board!

Thanks for trying, as you say, back to the drawing board.

I am determined to solve this mystery.  I do believe that my Gertrude is Ellen J but why she changed her name and lied on her marriage certificate is a mystery and why her death certificate November 1928 says she was 56 I have no idea
So in Marriage 1890 she says she was born in 1870, Ellen J was born in 1874 so that doesn't add up and neither does 56 in 1928.

Just need to find her mothers movements after 1871 now.

Neatwheat -- Gertrude's 'age at death' -- would be dependent upon what the person registering the death told the Registrar I suspect. That person may not have known her actual age and just said what they thought it was.

More evidence is demanded these days.

Thank you so much, I have spent all afternoon searching for marriages with the Sarah and Wyatt options but hadn't come up with anything.  This has helped a lot.  I have now found her on Ancestry and she died in 1935, pity I didn't find this before, my dad only died three years ago and he would have been 20 when she died.  He had a very good memory and this was his great grandmother. with this prompt he might have remembered something.  His sister is still alive and was 90 last month, she lives in Bristol so I might call her tomorrow and see what she can remember now.  She would have been 10 when she died but only 3 when her grandmother died (Ellen)
Many thanks NEATWHEAT
