1851 - Vinten not enumerated?
« on: Friday 09 October 15 18:22 BST (UK) »
Hi, please note that Vinten has been recorded/transcribed previously as Vintin/Vinton/Venten/Winton and even Hinton.

Can anyone find Sarah Vinten and her newborn baby Emily Sarah in the 1851 census.

Sarah was born anytime between 1815 - 1829 in Middlesex (she's pretty consistent about the place but not the year).  As Sarah Clark she married George Vinten in 1846 Deptford when her father is given as William Clark, wheelwright.  I have never been able to find her in any record prior to marriage.

By 1851 she and George had three children: Hannah b. 1847, William b. 1848 and Emily Sarah born 1 January 1851 all at Keston, Kent. George and the two eldest children are found in Keston in 1851 (HO107; Piece: 1606; Folio: 225; Page: 2) along with niece Ann Vinton.

However, Sarah and Emily are not there and cannot be found elsewhere.  All members of the family have been found in subsequent censuses so I know they were alive in 1851.

Sarah died 1891 and Emily in 1921.

Can anyone find them in the 1851 please or indeed any details re Sarah Clark prior to her marriage to George in 1846?

I wonder whether, as the baby was so young, there was a complication and they were in a hospital or workhouse and recorded with just their initials?

Yes, that's a good thought - I'll check for an SV and an EV together.

I have actually done further research on Sarah....she died in September 1891 in Lewisham, and her age at death is given as 67 (giving her a birth year of 1824).

I have found a baptism of a Sarah Clark in St George in the East, Middlesex in February 1824 (the actual date of birth is January of that year). Sarah's birthplace on the censuses is almost always (with one exception, I think) given as Middlesex - and the age fits with her given age at death in 1891.

I know from her marriage certificate that her father was a William Clark, wheelwright. The parents of the Sarah baptised in 1824 are William & Elizabeth Clark - and William's occupation is a wheelwright. The same couple have another daughter, Ann, baptised in 1826.

I think this Sarah might be 'my' Sarah, but I can't find Sarah, William, Elizabeth, Ann in the 1851 census.

Thanks,
