Hi There

HUM A strong Irish Brogue  ???

Given the account you have given of her she could have 'put it on' !

Each of our counties has it's own distinct sound so it wouldn't help to narrow down her origins.

I posted the Patrick Hoey, trying to think outside the box . . .

I was thinking that Patricia could have been illegitimate . . . was that ever considered ?

That could account for her not being with her father !

Hough / Haugh is not a Dublin name, Hoey would be moreso, so that's why I put that possibility out there.

The age too has to be take with a grain of salt . . .

Again, can you give her aliases so that I can see does that give any leads ?!

Also, can you name her children in chronological order as I may get leads that way ?!

Tara

1. My gmother by all accounts was very deaf this could account for a very strong accent because she spoke as she heard may be. As for each county has there own accent I have no doubt this is true, but to foreigners there seems to be a similarity in the accents which identifies Irish from Scottish or the other Gaelic based nations. At the time there was a fairly large influx of immigrants into Australia there may have been some confusion with her accent. Though I have been in contact with another of her grand children the daughter of Paul. Paul seemed to be of the opinion that she came from Dublin. Though this may not be correct as Patricia had died by the time he was 2 and would only be repeating second hand info..

There is every chance that Patricia is illegitimate, the only record I have is on her marriage certificate that states father and mother are; Patrick Hough and mother Patricia O'Connelly. From what I found she would bend the truth to fit the occasion. Because of her naming her parents I never really considered anything else.

Her alias's; Patricia Irene alias Mary Irene Hough alias Armstrong alias Thompson alias Feilding taken from Police Gazette No 50. dated 1939.

Children in order of birth;
Oscar Joseph Anderson. deceased 1945
Patricia Elsie (Elise) Anderson.
Dorothy Ruth Anderson
Kathleen Irene Anderson
Paul Desmond Anderson Deceased 1999
Another Dorothy Ruth died as an infant all the children were born in Australia on the Eastern sea board. Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane from what I can work out by aligning birth dates to Police files or at the time known where abouts. i.e. news paper clippings of the time.
Age yes even more so as police gazettes describe as looking very old for her given age. Though there seems to be a consistency through out her records i.e. police, marriage and death certificates.

The thing is, the Christian name Patricia was rare back then.

There were only 13 in all of Ireland and only one of those would have been old enough to have children.

The combination of names she gave on her marriage cert just aren't adding up.

Mary Irene Hough is the name she used in her first arrest in Parramatta NSW in 1925 my earliest record of her in Australia.

Tara this lady used many diversionary tactics throughout her life, not wanting the law to catch up to her. From Australian police reports and News paper clippings she was quite skilled at hand bag theft, training her eldest daughter at 7 years old to help. I have wondered if she too was not taught as a child to steal and her and her parent/s known to the authorities in her home land.

Maybe she didn't come from Ireland but Manchester as stated on her wedding certificate, this is what I need to know.

Hi Mick

So, while accent, family accounts and police reports indicate that 'Patricia' originated in Ireland the names that she has given don't give any leads at all.

I'm afraid that, for now, she appears to have been too good at covering her tracks.

If you get any more leads then please come back and I shall have another look for you.

Best Of Luck

Tara
