Gospel Hall - Kingsdown Swindon
« on: Monday 12 October 15 09:47 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know the history of this building please?

It's in Hyde Road and appears to be derelict at this time and overgrown.  More of a tin hut type thing than a proper building.  My grandmother used to go there and I remember going to her funeral there in the 1980's.

I was wondering when it was built and who actually owned it.  It was always known as the Golly Hall.

Thanks for any replies  :)

It is mentioned here, but not the history, presumably you have tried google searches?

( Kingsdown Gospel Hall
Prior to 1881 the meetings were held outdoors, but moved to Mr & Mrs Keen's cottage, then to Mr G Hales
upper room, the existing building was built 1924. It finally closed in 1999.)

I was part of that church from 1972 until 1976, actually married there. Only three marriages ever, I believe.

It was a brethren assembly, and I note there is a reference to my blog mentioned above, where I describe the building.

It would have been owned collectively by the leading people. In my day this included a Mr Furze, a Mr Beer and at least two Mr Mulcocks. One of these owned the house where I think they used to meet in the 19th century. Will try and rack my brain for more details.

Welcome to rootschat, Rod.

Any idea if this is 'your' Mr Furze?  :

Thank you for posting Rod.  How interesting you got married there.

Village gossip has led me to Edmont Joinery using it as a storage facility but when I contacted them they said they don't own it Arkells Brewery do.

I have contacted them twice to ask about the building but to no avail.
I would love to see the outside looking more presentable at least cleared of rubbish weeds and brambles.

It is the Keene family I have links to.  The little cottage next to what was Godwins shop when I was a child was where my grandmothers brother and his wife lived.

Sadly yes, my former father in law. The children's names confirmed it. I knew he was attending Pencil Gospel Hall after Kingstown Gospel Hall closed - which I think was in the 1990s.
