A warm welcome to Rootschat :)

Transcript from the Bankruptcy Directory
John Hallett
Clock & watch maker
Lyme Regis, Dorset
29 June 1830
Thank you for your warm welcome.
I have a number of newspaper cuttings concerning his bankruptcy.  But I cannot find when he was discharged although Pigot's Directory of 1842 has him working in Church Street, Lyme as a watch and clockmaker.  I think he died in June 1842 so his son William George must have continued the business because William was mentioned in Robson's Directory of 1839 as working as a watchmaker in Church Street, too.

Yes, I have that baptism but still not 100% certain that it's my John Hallett, mostly because he seems so attached to Lyme Regis in many other records.

To add to what Captain's got:
The commissioners in a commission of Bankrupt awarded and issued against John Hallett, of Lyme Regis, in the county of Dorset, Clock and Watch-Maker, Dealer and Chapman, intend to meet on the fourth day of February next, at Twelve of the Clock at Noon. at the Court of the Commissioners of Bankrupts, in Basinghall-Street, in the City of London (by adjournment from the 7th day of January instant), in order to take the Last Examination of the said Bankrupt; when and where he is required to surrender himself and make a full discovery and disclosure of his estate and effects and finish his examination; and the Creditors, who have not already proved their debts, are to come prepared to prove the same, and with those who have already proved their debts, are to assent or dissent from the allowance of his certificate.

and welcome to Rootschat!
Thank you for your welcome and the transcript.  I had the information but cannot find a record of his discharge which must have happened to allow him to be trading in 1842.

In 1812 the Oxford University and City Herald talks about a Jacob Martin who was sentenced to hard labour for..  stealing silver watch in the house of John Hallett, jun. of Lyme-Regis, watch-maker. As he is called 'junior' that suggests his father was also a John.

Richard

That's a very good surmise, thank you.  And helps on my baptism research.

Also at Chideock
John Hallet and Elizabeth Biles married 13 Apr 1778 by licence

Thank you for both thoughts, Lizzie.

There is a John son of John bapt in Chideock 13 Sep 1784 mother Elizabeth.
I have been trying to find information about John Hallett's parents, any siblings, his marriage (I think he married a Susan Hayward) and how he came to be a clockmaker.

There is a John Hallett, 68, b Chid(e)ock in the 1851 census, living in Somerset, who is likely to be this person. I think there are too many John Halletts born around 1783 to be sure of deciding which one he is without other evidence. There are Halletts in Lyme Regis from the 17th century onwards (including a slave owner who brought some slaves back to Dorset) so he is just as likely to have descended from them.

What is the evidence for his marrying Susan Hayward? i see two of their children, including the first in 1809, have Hayward as a middle name, but is there more?

I agree, that seems to rule out the Chideock John
