Stephen ANGEL - Merchant Navy Indenture
« on: Tuesday 13 October 15 00:25 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for details of Stephen ANGEL's Merchant Navy record.  He was born in Paisley in 1831 and became an apprentice seaman at age 14 possibly in Liverpool, England. Looking for any details such as name of vessel and name of Master, confirmation it was Liverpool, etc...

Thanks,

Fred

I have found some scant info. on FindMyPast but neither of the 2 entries lists ships, masters, etc.

Stephen Angel - no. 106507 - born 5/11/1830 Paisley. Became Apprentice aged 15 - when unemployed resides in Paisley.

Issued at Glasgow 19/5/1845 - physical description 5'8", brown hair, fair complexion, hazel eyes.

The other page just a listing of all men named Angel with their number, name and birthplace.

That's it I'm afraid.

His Seaman's Ticket says that he sailed on Clydeside registered vessels and gives the name of one vessel registered in Greenock. Unfortunately it is very difficult to read, Begins with Dex, Des, Der Deo ? The reason I know he sailed on Clydeside ships is by interpreting the port numbers. The other letters are the ships port rotation number.  No "key" to Port Rotation numbers ( ie matching the number to the name of a ship) is known to exist.
I think you should put a copy of his Seaman's ticket on the Handwriting interpretation board to see if anyone has better eyesight than me. If you can get that sorted it would be possible to back track via crew agreements ( provided they have not been destroyed) to find all of his ships.
The only Greenock vessel 1845/46 I can find is DEOGAUM but somehow I don't think that's the one.

The only other recourse is to visit Kew to look at crew agreements of Greenock registered ships 1845/46 These are in the series BT98

It may also pay you to look at the Index of Apprentices in BT150 This should tell you his first ship.(the index may be on line but I don't know where

A search of Clydeside newspapers may also give you the name of the unknown vessel.

The Ticket Number above his seems to record similar details for 1854.
I think the unclear entry says "Deserted at Greenock".
Not quite sure if that makes sense for a man from Paisley !!!

Thanks Annette.

Thanks seaweed.

Thanks jcmac.

Stephen is my great-great-grandfather. I'm in Sydney, Australia. Family history says he went to sea at 14, ended up in goldfields in California and then the goldfields in Ballarat and Bendigo in Victoria. He was in Victoria by about 25 Sep 1854 but arrival not yet found.

A few of the records in Scotland have the name as Angle.
Stephen Angle  b. 5 Nov 1831
Bap. 4 Dec 1831  Paisley Low, Renfrew, Scotland
Thomas Angle & Mary Clark

The physical description is new so that's good to have.

25 SEP 1854
ANGEL, SAMUEL.

Comment: YOUR BROTHER STEPHEN WISHES YOU TO WRITE TO HIM

I know almost nothing about indentures, port numbers and port rotation numbers, ships's numbers, etc...

I believe his indenture is dated 15 May 1845 and lists him as 14. I could be wrong but I thought Liverpool and 'Minerva'. ?

Regards,

Fred

Fred,
I don't think this is of much help - there is a Ticket 529.640 for a Thomas Angel b.Paisley 1823, FWTS in 1851, Issued Liverpool 24.9.1851. Only one voyage noted 1851 on what looks like "Pointer".
Can't find anything for a Samuel Angel.

The Ticket issued before Stephen -
106.506 Robert McQueen b.Paisley age 15, Apprentice, Issued Glasgow 19.5.1845.
The voyages recorded are exactly the same so it is possible they decided to move on together being Paisley Buddies.
